Dietary intake of DHA is required at all life stages. It is required for healthy cognitive and visual function, proper cardiovascular function, and associated with reduced risk of primary and secondary cardiovascular disease.

NutraSea DHA — redefining sustainability

As the industry leader for innovation and environmental stewardship Ascenta is dedicated to continually sourcing the “highest quality ingredients derived from the most sustainable sources”. This commitment is of utmost importance for omega-3 because the best source of this important nutrient is fish, and global fisheries have largely been mismanaged.

More than ever omega-3 rich fish such as cod, tuna, and shark are threatened by overfishing. Alongside this threat is the questionable practice of salmon farming. Since its inception, Ascenta has sourced exclusively sustainable species from well managed and sustainable fisheries.

Focused on resource diversification, NutraSea DHA from squid oil brings an exciting and new source of omega-3 to our product line. Squid is an abundant marine species and is unparalleled for sustainable and eco-friendly resource management. Squid are most known as the source for the popular dish calamari but much of the squid however is not used for calamari and has traditionally been regarded as a waste product. This “waste” product is one of the best known sources of the same omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, EPA and DHA. Squid is in fact one of the richest sources of omega-3 containing 35% more omega-3 than wild salmon and 100% more than krill!

Superior quality and sustainability

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) fish oil monograph has become the international standard for pharmaceutical quality fish oils. Ascenta’s omega-3 oils exceed the CRN pharmaceutical quality and purity standards.

Manufacturing Assurance

Ascenta products are produced under Good Manufacturing Practices. Our modern manufacturing facility is licensed and audited by the Natural Health Products Directorate and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Volatile Compounds

The oxidation (breakdown) of omega-3 oils is a complex process that occurs in many stages. Volatile Compounds (VC) are an important marker of oil quality. The formation of VCs in omega-3 oils results in an unpleasant taste and smell, a common characteristic of most fish oil supplements. Through the use of sophisticated processing methods and proprietary antioxidants, Ascenta’s oils have the lowest levels of VCs resulting in a pleasant fresh taste and smell throughout its shelf life.

Triglycerides

Natural fish oils are comprised of molecules called triglycerides (TG), however most concentrated fish oils are converted into an alternate form called an ethyl ester (EE) used as an inexpensive way to concentrate the oil. Natural TG fish oils have three fatty acids linked to a glycerol backbone whereas EE fish oils have one fatty acid linked to one molecule of ethanol (alcohol). A number of studies have demonstrated that TG fish oils are more stable and absorbed 2-3 times better than their EE counterpart. All Ascenta products are in a natural triglyceride form.
