Sonnet Lauberth, certified health coach and author of In Sonnet's Kitchen, shares this unique way to use avocados to help ease the pain of sunburn.

Who knew that avocado wasn't just for eating? This time of year I love using avocado in salads, smoothies, and — you won't believe this — even on my skin.

During the summers, I'm usually pretty careful about staying in the shade, keeping my skin covered, and not going outside during the middle of the day (when the sun's rays are harshest). However, sometimes, even with all that careful planning, you find yourself dealing with a sunburn. And we all know how much fun that is . . . not.

A few years back when I was dealing with a particularly painful sunburn and was completely out of aloe vera, I found myself searching my kitchen for something else I could try on my poor sunburnt skin. This was exactly how I discovered the power of avocados and how to use avocados to treat sunburn.

Avocados are packed with healthy fats, minerals and antioxidants that work to help hydrate and nourish the skin. First, you'll need to mash up half of a ripe avocado. Then you can apply just the avocado to skin directly, or mix it with a tablespoon of olive oil or aloe vera to help rehydrate skin and calm the sunburn. I personally like to mix the avocado with olive oil before applying it to the burn. You can also use any mixture that's leftover as a deep conditioner for hair to help smooth split ends.
