THE provision of additional vitamin D to children and pregnant women in Scotland could reduce the likelihood of developing MS in later life, a charity has said.
The Capital-based MS Society Scotland, said the new Shine on Scotland campaign could help more people get the nutrients which are usually provided by the sun, and therefore in shorter supply in Scotland than elsewhere in Europe.
Scientists earlier this year established a link between vitamin D and the risk of developing MS.
The initiative, which has been launched at the Scottish Parliament, is lobbying for the more widespread introduction of the vitamin for future generations.
Acting director of the society Sherine Krause said: “Getting the right amount of vitamin D is important for everyone’s health, but it is especially crucial for pregnant women and young children. ”
