Knowing Me, Knowing You: Promoting a Healthy Brain
Cognitive decline is frequently accepted as a hallmark of aging, but there are proactive steps, helpful tools, and a number of key supplements that may be used for prevention. Disabilities related to the brain and mental health are present in 43% of the world population. Two of the more commonly known brain ailments are Alzheimer’s and dementia. The onset of Alzheimer’s is clinically marked by a decline in cognitive function and a shrinkage of the medial temporal lobe of the brain.
According to researcher and author Patrick Holford, Alzheimer’s is preventable for 99% of us. In his book, “Upgrade Your Brain”, he stresses that in order to prevent these diseases, we must focus on daily movement, adequate sleep, what we eat-less sugar, more fibre, and how we live-reduce stress, meaningful relationships and connection to nature. He also emphasizes that it is crucial to lower homocysteine levels in the brain. Elevated levels of homocysteine contribute to more rapid brain shrinkage however, implementing high doses of B vitamins (B6, B12, folate) is commonly recommended to combat and lower levels of this easily measured biomarker. Studies have shown that individuals with sufficient omega-3 DHA had 73% less brain shrinkage compared to placebo when given the B vitamin treatment. In addition to coenzymated B vitamins and omega-3s, antioxidants and phospholipids like phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine can help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Brain Health Boosters
- Antioxidants: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, CoQ10, NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine) to scavenge free radicals
- Phosphatidylserine: active component of neuron structure and function that may improve memory, mood, and stress coping mechanisms.
- Senolytics: Quercetin, Curcumin, and Resveratrol to help clear “zombie” cells (cells that no longer divide but promote inflammation).
- Magnesium L-threonate: due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier this form of magnesium can support synaptic density, improving memory and executive function.
- Coenzymated B vitamins: can help break down homocysteine
- Omega-3s: & Vitamin D: support neurotransmitter function and communication between brain cells
