A daily dose of ground flax seed can reduce hormone levels associated with a risk of breast cancer, say US researchers from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.In their study, 48 post menopausal women took 7.5 grams per day of ground flax seeds for a period of 6 weeks, followed by 15 grams per day for the next 6weeks. The intake of flax was associated with reductions in various hormones implicated in the development of breast cancer, including estradiol, estrone and testosterone. The hormone changes were most pronounced in overweight and obese women. The researchers say the results suggest that "dietary flaxseed may modestly lower serum levels of sex steroid hormones, especially in overweight/obese women."
