The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids; that is, they must be obtained from the diet because they are not manufactured in the body. Omega-3 fatty acids are an integral part of the body’s cell membrances, including those in the brain and nervous system. When there is an imbalance in the types of fats that form these cell membranes, because of a lack of omega-3 fatty acids and an excess of omega-6 fatty acids and trans fats from a diet high in processed foods, the cell membrances lost their fluidity, flexibility, and permeability, causing a slowdown in neurotransmission. EPA and DHA ensure the efficient transmission of hormones and other compounds that help regulate mood and support emotional well-being.

Scientific studies across different countries suggest an inverse association between seafood consumption and national rates of major depression and bipolar disorder. Several studies have found omega-3 fatty acid concentrations to be lower in the plasma and adipose tissue (fat) of individuals suffering from depression compared with controls. One randomized controlled trial that assessed the effects of EPA and DHA in patients with bipolar disorder found that those supplemented with EPA and DHA had a significantly longer period of remission than those on an olive oil placebo over a 4-month period. Patients who took the EPA and DHA supplements also experienced less depression than those who took the placebo.
