The festive period can present its own set of pet perils, with owners forgetting to keep their wits about them when revelling in Christmas cheer.

From tinsel to fairy lights, chocolate to over-indulgent doggy dinners, nothing will ruin a Christmas for both you and your vet more than an emergency trip down to your local clinic on the big day. Love and affection is always better than just spoiling your pets with the excesses of the festive season.

Keep their diet simple and their routine intact to get through Christmas without a health hitch. New collars, leads, bowls and toys are a welcome gift for your four- legged friends.

Steer clear of rich foods and festive treats as that will only lead to upset tummies. With that small bit of advice now bestowed, I wish you and your pets a wonderfully warm, fun and happy Christmas season.
