EXERCISE and a healthy diet could prevent nearly 80,000 cancer cases a year, it has been estimated.

The figures from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) relate to 12 common forms of the disease and include 19,100 breast and 16,100 bowel cancer cases.

Four in 10 people the charity surveyed were unaware of the link between diet and cancer and only 45 per cent recognised the benefits of exercise.

WCRF adviser Professor Martin Wiseman said: “These estimates set out in stark terms just how high the stakes are.

“When you consider that they do not include the cancers that would be prevented through not smoking, it is clear cancer is actually a largely preventable disease.”

The WCRF recommend people exercise for 30 minutes a day, be lean without becoming underweight, avoid sugary drinks and processed foods and limit consumption of red meats while avoiding processed meats.

They also say men should have nomore than two alcoholic drinks aday – women no more than one.
