Since March is National Nutrition Month I thought it might be fun (dietitians think nutrition is fun) to talk about the Big 3: protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
These “macronutrients” are needed by our bodies in the largest amounts. And protein – according to the recent report of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans – is “the most important macronutrient.”
Why should we care? Protein is the main component of every cell in our body. It constructs the enzymes and hormones that regulate all our body processes. Every tissue and organ of our body relies on a steady supply of amino acids (building blocks of protein) to function at peak capacity.
